গোপন স্বপনে ছাইল
অপরশ আঁচলের নব নীলিমা ।
উড়ে যায় বাদলের এই বাতাসে
তার ছায়াময় এলো কেশ আকাশে ।
সে যে মন মোর দিল আকুলি
জল-ভেজা কেতকীর দূর সুবাসে ।।

My thoughts gambol around
Intoxicated by which breeze
Sways my heart, sways for no reason
To a delightful thrill
My heart-sky is awash
With emotions so sweet
Dark dense clouds brimming
With fresh new drops of rain
I sight her not, even a glimpse
It is only in my mind I hear
There it sounds ever so often
Tinkling of anklet bells

I glimpse you now and then
Why not everlastingly?
Why do clouds curtain my heart

Translation
Companion to the clouds, my heart,
Soars beyond all horizons
Towards the wide open void
With bright, lyrical pulse of the Sraabon* outpour;
My mind glides on swan-wings,
Amid slight, startling spurts of lightning;
How the storm flashes her ankle-bells,
Resonating with fierce delight!
Mountain springs call out for a tempest
Gurgling with deep resonance;
Blowing in from the Eastern sea
The wind gushes over
Boisterous, bubbly waves of the river;
My heart darts — stirred by a savage current
Surging in tune with
Clamorous branches of the forest groves.
Bengali novels occupy a major part of Bengali literature. The first official Bengali novel is Durgeshnondini written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1865. Some great novelists of West Bengal like Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore, Manik Bandopadhyay, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay developed the newly introduced genre in such a way that ‘new’ changed into ‘matured’ through their works. Almost all these literary activities went on in full swing in Kolkata.

Rabindranath Tagore’s 151 Birth Anniversary
The youngest of thirteen surviving children, Rabindranath Tagore was born in the Jorasanko mansion in Calcutta, India to parents Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi on 7 May 1861 (Bengali calendar: 25 Baishakh, 1268).
Rabindranath Tagore’s last birthday (1941) was celebrated in Shantiniketan. Prior to the day, Tagore wrote the song হে নূতন, দেখা দিক আরবার (Hey Nutan Dekha Dik Aarbar).
